Course Description
This course includes a study of housing trends, housing styles, housing alternatives, and financial aspects of acquiring a home. Interior design is included with an emphasis on art principles and design elements, including color, line, and texture; as well as selection and arrangement of furniture; floor plans and layouts; selection of floor coverings, window and wall treatments, and accessories. A final project emphasizes the coordination of the interior design elements. The course concludes with an introduction to housing and interior design careers.

Written tests, reports, Internet research, activity and worksheets, cooperative learning activities, written evaluations, rubrics and checklists, group projects.
Performance Objectives
1) Define housing and briefly describe how it has evolved.
2) Interpret scale drawings and models using maps and blueprints.
3) Analyze the basic physical and psychological needs that housing satisfies.
4) Compare and contrast housing needs among people of different ages and life stages.
5) Assess the importance of building homes that follow the concept of universal design.
6) Describe how housing reflects cultural views and values.
7) Identify social trends that affect housing.
8) Point out ways in which cultures influence each other.
9) Analyze the role of technology in home construction.
10) Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of different natural and manufactured materials used in home construction.
11) Describe the three basic methods of home construction.
12) Describe careers in five areas of the housing industry.
